This year released the MacBook Neo, their entry level laptop that was supposed to be budget friendly. To bring down the price they had to skimp on a lot of features and specifications. The advent of A.I. was ushered an industry wide shortage of RAM and solid state drive, and Apple couldn't absorb the costs any longer. They relented and increased prices for most their device catalogue and the MacBook Neo was not spared. This meant two things, the MacBook Neo wasn't unbelievably cheap anymore and the MacBook Air has become somewhat pricier. The latest MacBook Air line up begins at 512GB SSD, but given that it has become pricier you may be considering the Neo or even looking to hit the pre-owned market for a good deal on a previous generation MacBook Air. Take it from me, do not buy the MacBook Neo or MacBook with a 256GB SSD.
The Storage Size is Bad
I speak as someone who is currently in the trenches and I find it more unbelievable that we, as consumers, have largely accepted Apple's 256GB SSD. Tech reviewers often offer a seemingly sensible piece of advice that if money is tight, upgrade the RAM to 16GB and stick with the 250GB SSD. They are part to blame for the reinforcement of the idea that this woefully inadequate storage capacity is not that bad. I’ve been using a 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD MacBook as my daily driver for months, and the experience has been nothing but frustrating. Read carefully, this is a cautionary tale from the trenches.
The Will Never Allow
If you do more than browse the internet, a 250GB MacBook is not enough. Imagine you’re working on a project, with a dozen apps open and a few dozen browser tabs. Suddenly, some apps quit and others freeze. This is guaranteed to happen because although 16GB of RAM gives you a bit of headroom, it's not magic and once you have a lot of apps open at the same time the macOS will attempt to offload some of the memory to the SWAP file. But the kicker is, if you have a 256GB SSD, the SWAP will quickly fill your storage capacity. With a full RAM and SSD, your apps will freeze.
The Odd Workings of SWAP memory
To understand how SWAP memory works, think of your RAM as your work desk. The more apps and tabs you open, the more cluttered it gets. When the desk is full, macOS starts shoving inactive items off the bench and onto the floor of your SSD and that floor space is the SWAP memory. This is supposed to make your laptop feel snappy, but on a 256GB SSD it’s a disaster waiting to happen. By default on macOS, the SWAP file has no hard limit, it will grow and grow, eating your storage as you work. The more you multitask, the more you run out of RAM, which forces your Mac to eat its own SSD storage until you have nothing left.
The Ever so Haunting System Data
When you are not contending with an ever growing SWAP file you will be battling it out with real villain of the Apple ecosystem, the infamous grey System Data block in your storage settings. Apple doesn't tell you what's in here. It’s a black hole, mostly filled with cached data. Every app you use such as Spotify, Slack, Photoshop, Discord, dumps data onto your drive to speed things up. Modern apps are designed this way so they don't have to download every bit of data every time you need it, downloading take time and it can make an app seem slow. In their quest of quick apps, developers strain yours storage capacity. It seems innocuous at first, a little here and a little there but it adds up shockingly fast.
This data is stored in a purposefully hidden folder on your Mac called Library. To find it, you need to know where to look. Once you’re there, you might be horrified to find your Library folder is eating up 60, 70, or even 80GB of space. You can't just delete this from the main settings. And digging into the folder is a digital minefield. If delete the wrong thing it can corrupt your apps or even your entire OS.
The Uninstall that Never Was
Okay, so you have all this junk in the Library folder and the logical solution is to uninstall some apps you don't use to ease the strain on your SSD. The best thing is, on a Mac, it's beautifully simple because all have to do is to drag the app from the Applications folder to the trash. Except, that's not the entire story. You can drag a 5GB application to the trash, empty the trash and check your storage only to find you've freed up a fraction of that space. Why? Because the app left all of its support files, caches, and data behind in the Library folder. There's no winning, that's why you hardly ever see the System Data storage allocation ever decrease by any real margins. Apps you've long deleted, by the will of macOS, will remain on your system for months or even years if you don't know how to remove them.
The Self-Care You Need
With all that said, it's only right to advise that getting a 256GB storage MacBook will unleash constant stress on you. The stress will arise from the anxiety of the risk of crashing and losing work and the time you'll waste managing storage. The tech reviewers of YouTube don't tell you this but getting a 512GB laptop isn't a nice to have if you intend on leading a stress free life in the few years preceded by your big boy purchase.
